When it comes to performance-focused mods, not all knife upgrades are created equal. But if you own a Spyderco knife and want to get the most out of it, certain modifications actually do improve function—not just looks.
In this guide, I’ll break down five mods I’ve done repeatedly for clients that consistently result in smoother action, better grip, or more efficient carry.
1. Upgrade to Phosphor Bronze or Skiff Bearings 🪜
Swapping factory washers for phosphor bronze washers or Skiff Rocket Glide Rings can immediately:
Improve deployment smoothness
Reduce friction
Extend service life on high-use folders
I recommend this for:
Para 3
PM2
Manix 2
🔗 You can find compatible hardware and washer kits at https://spydercoparts.com, tested for fit and performance.
2. Replace the Factory Clip with a Deep Carry Clip 👥
Factory clips are fine—but deep carry clips:
Sit lower in your pocket
Reduce snag points
Offer better retention during active use
Popular aftermarket options include:
Lynch NW (Titanium)
MXG Gear (Stainless and Ti)
Our own discreet deep carry clips designed for Spyderco-specific mounting patterns
🔎 This is one of the easiest upgrades that immediately affects EDC feel.
3. Add Aftermarket Scales for Improved Grip and Rigidity 🧤
Spyderco’s FRN and G10 are solid—but if you want:
Better grip texture (Micarta, rough G10)
Added weight and strength (Titanium, Carbon Fiber)
Improved rigidity for hard-use models
Then scale swaps are the move.
🪑 Bonus: We stock backspacers, screws, and liner-fit scales at https://spydercoparts.com that won’t interfere with pivot action or compression lock fitment.
4. Reprofile the Edge or Adjust Bevel Angles 🧨
Factory edges are serviceable, but reprofiling:
Sharpens the apex with better edge geometry
Adds a micro-bevel for durability
Tailors performance to your cutting style (slicer vs. workhorse)
Try:
15° per side for fine slicing
20° per side for all-purpose durability
📏 Use a guided system or the Spyderco Sharpmaker (https://spyderco.com) for repeatable results.
5. Swap Factory Hardware for Hardened Screws and Tensioned Pivots ⚙️
Stock screws can strip easily. If you mod or maintain your knife often, upgrade to:
Torx T8/T6 hardened screws
Tuned pivots with washers for tighter tolerance
We design our pivot kits at https://spydercoparts.com to match each Spyderco model’s threading and clearance perfectly. This prevents blade play and keeps lockup solid over time.
Final Thoughts 🔪
Modding your Spyderco isn’t just about aesthetics. With the right upgrades, you can seriously elevate performance, control, and longevity.
If you’re unsure where to start, I always recommend beginning with a clip or washer upgrade—both offer high impact with low install difficulty.
